According to Newman, he never intended "Hat" to be taken seriously. He thought it more of a joke than anything else. Not so Joe Cocker and Tom Jones. They took it much more seriously, as both had hits with it. It was also covered by the Jerry Garcia Band, Michael Grimm, Bill Wyman, the Dan Reed Network, Three Dog Night, and Jess Roden. In my cover, Newman's brassy intro is replaced by a string section, with trumpet and trombones picking up the melody responsibilities as the song moves along. Also featured are a funky sounding guitar and various percussion instruments.
