Heavy metal groups often bury some very distinct melody lines beneath rather raucousy arrangements of their sometimes abrasive vocal, guitar, and percussion work. Such is not the case with this tune by one of rock's premiere heavy metal bands. Released in 1992, "Matters" is given a much gentler treatment by Hetfield and crew than some of the group's other well-known songs. And not only are the melody lines of the song not buried, their foreground treatment by the band is quite moving. In my arrangement, most of the heavy lifting of the melodies is done by various horn and reed sections, accompanied by choir voices, the ever-majestic pipe organ, and an arpeggiated piano.
