I was hooked on this song many years ago, when I first heard those guitar chords walking behind Withers' plaintive singing. For my cover, I open with a bass drum, side-stick, shaker, and an ear-catching reverse crash cymbal effect. These are then augmented by male choir voices and a strummed guitar. The melody is carried by a piano and synthesizer.
